I just started bowling again 20 years later and have a 15-16# balls that are heavy. Would a 14# work the same?

There is no reason to be afraid of losing ball reaction with a 14lb. Hammer Pure Envy. If you are more comfortable and can repeat your shots more consistently then you will see a benefit from going down in weight. Pin carry will be fine.
